Chapter Twelve

"What the frak are you?"

The slobbering black maw dripping, well to be perfectly honest, something that looked a whole lot like snot all over me made me think Alien, but since Sigourney Weaver hadn't signed up to be my back-up, I hoped like hell I'd been wrong. Nope, might not be an alien infestation, but this guy definitely wasn't a local.

As it moved above me, its black skin shimmered blue along its back creating some sickly rainbow across its unnatural flesh. Thin reeds of bone raced up its spine and flexed with every undulation of the foul thing's body. Just looking at its blank skull-like face made my stomach churn. The thing didn't have eyes! How could I strike fear into something that couldn't even see me being all badass? Gaping holes pulsed as it sniffed the air. Okay, maybe they were its eyes, and it was smelling with the tongue lashing back and forth flinging more mouth snot into the air. Heck if I knew. I just knew if my gun hand hadn't been shaking so bad I couldn't find a trigger to save my life—which I seriously needed to do—I would have shot it out of my waking nightmare. Make that nightmares! This fugly had brothers, could've been sisters, angling right toward us.

"We are the children of she who birthed monsters. Lilith. We are Abandon." I could have taken the explanation better if the Gollum ripoff had said it and not sprayed it. Was it just me, or did really cheesy monsters always refer to themselves in the third person?

"Okay, you had me scared there for a minute. I thought you were something to quiver in my boots over." I was, but hopefully they, or it, hadn't noticed that fact. "Let me guess, Legion's little bro?"

"Do not mock us, blood witch. We are your death." The creature rose up and hissed.

"Sorry, you're about three days late." I inched back as it splattered the ground at my feet with a festering glob of yesterday's sinus infection. "Watch the boots, buster. I don't know what that muck is, but I just shined these suckers."

Shivering, Gollum lifted its head and raked the air with its tongue. "You wobble over nothing, betraying the fear inside you. I can taste it heavy about us. It is like a sin not yet sampled."

"You need serious help." Two more steps back, because I felt a vigorous jog in my immediate future. "What say we stop playing games and you tell me what you want?"

"To crunch your bones to dust and suck the marrow from your mangled flesh." Something weirdly close to a laugh shook loose from its jowls.

I bopped it on the end of the snout with the barrel of my Glock. When that didn't get his attention, I went for the more direct route. I shoved it straight up the thing's nasal passage until it touched my happy finger. By happy, I meant the one pressing ever so gently on the trigger.

"This is how this is going to play out, Gollum.
